About Me: From Tragedy to Triumph

A Fateful Night that Altered My Life Forever

Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs when we least expect it and mine took a sharp turn one fateful night at 16. One fateful night, a car accident left me a below-the-knee amputee, thrusting me into a world of pain, uncertainty and immense challengess. As I lay in that trauma hospital, miles away from home, I couldn’t foresee the profound impact it would have. Though, I spent the first week or two after the accident blind, either from the traumatic brain injury and the glass embedded in my eyes, so I wasn’t seeing much of anything.

Learning to Love My New Self

Acceptance didn’t come easily. In the early days of my journey as a below the knee amputee, I grappled with self-doubt, body image issues, and the fear of being defined by my disability. But slowly, with time, quite a bit of humor, and the unwavering support of my loved ones, I learned to embrace my new self. I discovered that my worth extended far beyond the physical, and that my spirit was unbreakable. Though my spirit may limitless, sometimes my body, not so much.

From “We” to “Me”: Navigating Life as a Widow

Life’s challenges didn’t stop with my disability. Six years ago, I became a widow, losing my loving husband and confidant. The transition from a “we” to a “me” was filled with heartache, loneliness, and the daunting task of rebuilding my life. I was “we” for nearly 20 years; the majority of my adult life. Now I have to learn to be “me”.

The fear of navigating the world alone compounded with my disability, but I refused to let it define me. Like all journeys, this one was complete with ups and downs, trials and tribulations. But, it’s been both those ups and those downs, those trials and the tribulations that have helped me to grow. To flourish. To get to (re)know myself.

Confronting Fear: The Catalyst for Adventure

Fear has a way of paralyzing us, making us question our every move. As a widow and amputee, fear seemed to lurk in every corner, whispering doubts and insecurities. But I made a choice—to confront fear head-on and turn it into a catalyst for growth. It was this determination that led me to embark on a remarkable journey of disabled adventure travel. I may still have a (healthy) fear of the shower, but getting out into the world, even alone, doesn’t scare me anymore. Now I’m more afraid of the things I will have missed out on when my time on Earth ends.

Embracing the World: A Path to Healing

Travel has an extraordinary power—it has the ability to heal, to rejuvenate, and to ignite the flame within. For me, disabled travel became the gateway to a world brimming with possibilities. Exploring new cultures, immersing myself in breathtaking landscapes, and connecting with fellow travelers brought a renewed sense of purpose and joy to my life. Why not come along with me and see how your life could change through a little adventure. Maybe adventure could be a path to healing for you as well.
